A support group is a safe, structured environment where individuals facing common struggles or concerns—such as grief, mental health issues, addiction, or chronic illness—meet to share their stories, experiences, and insights. These groups can be facilitated by a trained therapist, counsellor, or even a peer leader with lived experience. Group spaces can take various forms, from in-person meetings to online gatherings, offering flexibility and access for different needs.
In a fast paced world, we may find ourselves feeling alone and misunderstood by our loved ones. Because, no matter how close you are with them, they may not experience the same feelings that you do. This is where the importance of support groups and communities comes in. Being part of a community-based support group allows you to receive the care and understanding you need. It also raises awareness about the importance of creating a compassionate space for your loved ones, even if you can’t personally relate to all of their feelings.
Support groups offer a non-judgmental, confidential and dedicated space where we learn to express our feelings openly. Sometimes, it’s easier to talk to people outside of your closed circle who understand your situation from personal experience. Being able to speak freely about your struggles can be incredibly therapeutic and healing.
Support groups, especially peer-led ones, are often low-cost, making them an accessible option for individuals who may not be able to afford one-on-one therapy sessions. Therapist-led groups are typically more affordable than individual therapy sessions, offering a budget-friendly way to access professional support.
