— Benaaz Irani, Psychologist
I’ve encountered numerous instances where individuals, be they clients, friends, colleagues, or family, sought a quick and definitive ‘solution’ to their problems. The plea often echoes frustration and an overwhelming inability to think clearly for themselves under stressful circumstances, with requests like, “Can you just make a decision for me and solve this problem?” or “Make this go away!!!” It is a moment of vulnerability where they willingly entrust their power to me, simply because of my expertise in the realm of psychology.
It’s a common misconception that, as a trained mental health professional, I possess a magic wand capable of waving away life’s difficulties. However, it’s crucial for individuals to recognize that despite my knowledge and understanding of psychology, I am only human and cannot erase complexities of life. I don’t carry their unique set of lived experiences, which are essential for them to make the best choices and find personalized solutions.
Life is a journey, and each person’s path is distinctly their own. Rather than seeking quick fixes, we should embrace the process of navigating through challenges. However, societal expectations often hinder individuals from following this path, pressuring them to always know and make the correct decisions. The ultimate power to shape one’s life indeed lies within the individual. Psychology shows that solutions are not one-size-fits-all. What works for one person may not necessarily work for another. Instead of relinquishing control, it would be wonderful for individuals to explore their own inner resources, drawing from their experiences, strengths, and resilience.
So, what is my role then? My role is not to provide ready-made answers but to facilitate a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. Together, we can explore the depths of thoughts and emotions, uncovering the insights needed to make informed decisions. It’s a collaborative process where individuals learn to trust.
their instincts, cultivate resilience, and develop the skills necessary to face life’s uncertainties head-on. I am trained to uphold the principles of ethical practice, which include refraining from providing direct advice or making decisions on behalf of the client. Therapy relies on creating a safe and supportive space for individuals to express their thoughts and feelings freely. It’s about delving into the intricacies of their experiences, assisting in the identification of patterns, and fostering a deeper understanding of themselves. Counselling is not a quick-fix solution but a transformative journey that encourages individuals to tap into their inner resources, build resilience, and develop coping mechanisms tailored to their unique circumstances. By respecting the autonomy of the client and guiding them toward self-empowerment, the counselling process becomes a powerful tool for personal growth and introspection. Hoping that on the way, a few decisions and solutions can be arrived at.
In conclusion, the beauty of life lies in its unpredictability, and we were never meant to have all the solutions as counsellors nor as humans. Embracing the journey, with its twists and turns, allows for personal growth and self-realization. And isn’t that the point of it all, anyways?
